When you start thinking about adopting an Eclectus parrot, and you start talking to various people about the prospect, there is a very good chance that you will hear many myths, and absolute misinformation, concerning these very special birds. Here are the most common myths that you will likely hear:

Surprisingly, when people hear how wonderful Eclectus parrots are, they think that because they sound too good to be true, that there must be something inherently wrong with these creatures. The fact is that the Eclectus parrot is the most popular bird to adopt, and the reason for this is because they are actually quite pleasant pets.

Some people will tell you that Eclectus parrots only live for about eight to ten years. This is only true if the bird is not well cared for. A well cared for bird, on the other hand, lives to be between the ages of thirty and fifty.

Because Eclectus parrots were grossly malnourished when they were first brought to the United States largely because nobody understood their dietary needs these creatures were deemed as boring and stupid. This isn’t true. If the bird is well nourished, he is quite active and interesting.

For the same reason, many people believe that the Eclectus parrots health is fragile. This isn’t true at all. In fact, the Eclectus parrot is one of the healthiest captive birds in existence. They seldom get ill, and if they do, it is usually because they are not getting the proper nutrition.

This lack of understanding still exists in our world today. Some people don’t realize that Eclectus parrots require much more than bird seed or pellets. They require a well rounded diet of seeds, fruits, vegetables, and even grains.

You will hear reports of Eclectus parrots that have very bad behavior. In almost all instances of bad behavior, the bad behavior is due to negligence or improper nutrition. When the bird is well attended to, he is one of the easiest of all birds to keep as a pet.

Many people mistakenly think that Eclectus parrots do not talk, or do not talk very well. This is a complete myth that only becomes true when the bird is not sufficiently worked with. Eclectus parrots are actually considered the best talkers. They can learn an extensive vocabulary of words and phrases, and will even sing songs and make sound effects. Furthermore, the males sound very masculine, and the females sound very feminine.

In the future, if you hear negative things about Eclectus parrots, make it a point to find out for sure whether the information is true. The greatest source of information is a breeder with years of experience.

Choosing Your Pet Bird

A bird is an ideal pet for people who prefer more sedate activities, and who do not have the time or inclination to play fetch with their dogs or pay attention to their cats. In other words, birds are ideal for people who have not much time to devote to pets but would like to own a pet nonetheless. However, even if you are suited to owning a pet bird, it is worth taking some time to think about to what bird you will be ideally suited rather than just picking any bird. You will want to choose the type of bird which will be best for you and your lifestyle.

If you are short of time, it is probably wisest to choose a small or medium sized bird as they do not require as much attention. While it is true that larger birds usually make for a better companion, the downside is that they tend to be more of a handful to look after, and can be quite loud and messy.

Another consideration is whether you want to choose a bird that you can get out of its cage and pet, or if you would prefer a bird that you just look at and stays within its cage.

Parrots are one of the most popular pet birds but these are also one of the loudest ones. A compromise is to get a parrotlet instead. Parrotlet are a smaller version of parrots but they do not lack intelligence or energy.

Another parrot version is the parakeet. Parakeets are smaller than standard-sized parrots but they are still very intelligent and highly trainable, if reared properly. They are fun to have around, very colorful, and beautiful to look at.

A good choice if you want a medium-sized bird is a cockatiel. These are very clever and precocious birds, and you expect them to learn mimic just about any sound in your house.

Is A Parrot The Right Pet For You?

Many animal lovers get parrots because they are attracted to the parrot’s unusual personality. Parrots are entertaining and beautiful but they are also quick-tempered, independent and very smart animals.

With that being said is a parrot the right pet for you? There are many things to consider should you finally decide to purchase a parrot.

The first thing to consider is the size of your space. Do you have enough room to keep a large cage to house your parrot? You want to make sure that you and your parrot will be comfortable with the amount of room that you have.

Another thing to consider when deciding if a parrot is the right pet for you is noise. Parrots can be quite loud. You may enjoy the noise a parrot makes when it is trying to get your attention, however, you want to take into account your surroundings. If you are in an apartment or your neighbors are really close, it may be more noise than they can tolerate.

Do you have other pets, for instance a dog or a cat? There are some dogs that like to chase anything that moves and cats are natural hunters. This doesn’t mean that a parrot cannot become friends with a dog or cat but you should supervise them whenever your parrot is out of the cage.

Do you have small children? If you do you will want to make sure that you can keep an eye on them. A parrot’s beak if very powerful and a small finger through the cage can look mighty tasty or threatening to the parrot. You may want to make sure that you have a way to keep the parrot in a safe place when you cannot be around to supervise.

Please take these things into consideration when deciding if a parrot is the right pet for you. The last thing you want to do is spend a lot of time and money on getting a parrot just to have to get rid of it later on.

Why Do Birds Make Such Great Pets?

Why do birds make such good pets? It is interesting really, because birds are free and most likely do not wish to be put into a cage and yet they seem to like the companionship and safety from the outside world that cages offer and they seem to like the free food too.

Outside birds like Hummingbirds seem to hang around and will make your home their home as long as you feed the bird feeders for multiple generations. And it is a nice deal for them. They can enjoy buzzing around and knowing there is always food in the feeder for them, it is a win/win situation indeed for those who love birds.

Why does mankind love birds so much? After all we have a national bird; The Bald Eagle and there are endless bird watching sites on the Internet as well. In fact we seem to be all bird crazy, but why? Well many evolutionary biologists surmise that mankind has co-evolved along side our feathered friends.

The birds in the trees start making noise when intruders come near. And perhaps early mankind living in troops prior to our first civilizations used these warning sounds to reduce the element of surprise from something or some animal, which might harm them. Indeed this theory makes perfect sense. And so maybe we are genetically engineered to work together in this way some how. Perhaps this is why birds and people seem to go together?
